Brazil: Search for survivors continues in Sao Paulo after landslides, flooding kill 24

Locals continued to look for people trapped underneath dirt in Sao Paulo on Monday, after heavy rains triggered floods and landslides across the Brazilian state, leaving at least 24 people dead.
Fire department personnel said that in the Franco da Rocha district of Sao Paulo, 13 people had been rescued from the rubble, but only five had survived.
One local helping out with the rescue effort described having to hold his dead friends in his arms.
“To hold a ten-year-old child was very difficult too,” said the local resident.
Brazil’s Civil Defence confirmed on Monday afternoon three more deaths as a result of storms that have hit the State of Sao Paulo since Friday 28 January, causing rivers to overflow, flooding and landslides.
The Civil Defence also reported 1,546 families that had been homeless or displaced as a result of the extreme weather.

SOT, Regina, Local (Portuguese): “I lost three cousins, there’s an aunt of mine in the ICU, I have another cousin who is in a very serious condition. We can’t do anything, right?”

SOT, Richard, Local (Portuguese): “We’ve been here since 06:00 yesterday, we arrived before the firemen, there are close colleagues. I took friends of mine, deceased, in my arms, to hold a ten-year-old child was also very difficult. We also managed to rescue people who were alive, I don’t know if they’re still alive, but it’s hard, man, it’s hard.”

SOT, Alessandro, Lieutenant Colonel of local fire department (Portuguese): “So, we took out, rescued, 13 people. Of these 13, five, thank God, are alive. The rest are unfortunately dead.”
